The Bible = Truth

The latest post from Greg Stier sums up his feelings (and pretty much mine too) about the loose and liberal theology that is getting popular today.

If the Bible says it then I believe it. Now does that mean that I understand everything the Bible is talking about? No way! I struggle everyday to understand it more. But there are some core truths that are impossible to dispute if you take the Bible seriously. Among these are salvation by faith alone, Christ being the only way into heaven, the Trinity, the inerrancy of Scripture, the return of Christ and the deity of Jesus. By the way, these are the basic doctrines that the church has been hammering out as essentials for the last two millenia. And, in that same time span, there have been those who have sought to undermine them every step of the way.

What to wear

Today's blog post from Mark Driscoll is about the difference of opinion many Christians hold over how one should dress for church. My opinion is that if someone isn't dressed to offend then there shouldn't be a problem. I also think this should be a rather moot point. Unfortunately people like to make a big deal out of this issue.

A while back "Dear Abby" was asked a missional theology question. A debate ensued when one of her readers asked if people should be expected to dress up for church...

..."Dear Abby" hit one of the more debated missional theology issues in our day that is related to many other issues, such as how we view God (e.g., daddy, boss, or president), church buildings (e.g., God’s special house or just another room), what constitutes a church (e.g., a formal building or a people who love Jesus), and the feel of a church service (e.g., formal meeting or family reunion).

Adult Stem Cell Success Stories

by: Sarah Kleinfeld
David Prentice
Bill Saunders

The political battles raging in Congress and in state legislatures over whether to destroy human embryos in order to get embryonic stem cells have obscured an important fact. There is one kind of human stem cell research that everyone can and should support--that involving adult stem cells. Many scientists feel that adult stem cells, which can be found throughout the human body, even in infants, are the real hope for the future.

James Sherley, associate professor of biological engineering at MIT, notes: "Adult stem cell research is predicted to beat the pants off human therapeutic cloning [and embryonic stem cell] research when it comes to yielding significant advances in cell medicine. And adult stem cells provide better approaches. These cells that naturally function in the regeneration and repair of adult tissues pose no ethical concerns."

As Sherley notes, there are no ethical problems with the use of adult stem cells because such cells can be isolated without the necessity of destroying an embryonic--or any other--human being first. Past doubts about adult stem cells are daily proving to be mistaken. Recent studies show that many types of adult stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they can develop into different tissue types, and appear to equal the "plasticity" (or, in layman's terms, versatility) of embryonic stem cells.

Facing the Giants

I have not seen the movie yet because quite honestly for the same price of the movie I can buy the dvd when it comes out. I do that alot. I do want to see this one but I will probably wait. The reason I bring up this movie that I havn't seen yet is to show you the post Dave Burchett has on his blog today about Facing the Giants.

I am challenged by the faith of Alex Kendrick and the men and women who produced Facing the Giants. Do I have enough faith to believe that God can use my ability for Him? One of the memorable scenes from the movie involved a man who walked the halls daily praying for revival at the school. He tells a parable about two farmers who both pray for rain. One waits for it hopefully. The other waits for it while "preparing his fields." His concluding question? Which one is truly trusting God?

Test the spirits

The newest post from Mark Driscoll deals with what happens when a Christian leader does not remember to "...not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." (1 John 4:1). I think it is a very important reminder about what can happen to our theology when we stray from the teachings of Jesus and try to deliver the "PC" message that the world wants to hear. Its kind of like building your faith on something unstable, like a trampoline, instead of the solid, rock like foundation of the truth of the Bible.

By failing to test the voices speaking to him, a man who had given his life to doing ministry and building a church was ruined in a day because of a lack of discernment. It's a sobering lesson for every Christian leader, who James says will be judged more strictly than the average Christian, that we must let God be God and beware of the Serpent who loves to whisper, "Did God really say?"

What about the "Lion" part of God?

There is a very good article by Lee Wilson at Crosswalk.com about the fear of God. Lee points out in this article that "God has the power to destroy me, and I deserve it. Even if I didn't deserve it, there is no earthly court or lawyer to defend me -- I am absolutely helpless and powerless.". It is good to enjoy and rejoice in the great love and mercy of God but we must also remember that we are sinners and we are all guilty and fall short of Him. It is only through the perfect sacrifice of Christ that can our sins are paid for.

In today's "culture of tolerance," many have assumed God is just as tolerant and unbothered by sinful behavior as is politically correct at the moment. We've presented a picture of God as being full of grace, love and peace -- and that's correct, but what about the "Lion" part of God? He is, afterall, the "Lion" (Revelation 5:5) and the "Lamb" (Revelation 5:12)....

What happens to those who have never heard about Jesus?

That is the question of the week at GotQuestions.org. This is a tough question for us to answer because it can be hard for us humans to understand how God could let just one of his children be lost. As you will see in the answer to this question God has revealed himself to us, through His word and through His creation.

I find it just amazing to see God at work. God revealing himself was the topic of our bible study on Friday night and the lesson for our youth group on Sunday night. And now I find it as part of the answer of the question of the week at GotQuestions. God's ways are truly amazing.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.

There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.

Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
(Psalm 19:1-4)

Where do you see Jesus?

Today Dave Burchett posted an article on his blog titled "Where do you see Jesus?". I wanted to share it here. It is a very good article dealing with the reaction that a so called Christian group has had to the tragedy this week in Pennsylvania.

Full Article

I have had several people write to me and ask me to address the group of people in Kansas that pickets the funerals of fallen soldiers. I have hesitated to respond for two reasons. One, I do not wish to give this group any more exposure. Two, I always try to be gentle in my admonishment when I disagree with the views or actions of others. I cannot do that in this case. The group reached a despicable new low this week when they threatened to picket the funerals of those precious children who were killed in Pennsylvania. Cybercast News Service reported their “reasoning” for picketing the funerals.

The Westboro group says the Amish school girls were "killed by a madman in punishment for Gov. Ed Rendell's blasphemous sins against Westboro Baptist Church.
"Gov. Ed Rendell -- speaking and acting in his official capacity to bind the State of Pennsylvania -- slandered and mocked and ridiculed and condemned Westboro Baptist Church on national Fox TV," the group says on its website. Later in the story the group is quoted as saying that they are "continuing to pray for even worse punishment upon Pennsylvania."

Their rhetoric and actions make me physically ill....

A good lesson

I think that after the horrible tragedy this week in Pennsylvania, Americans can learn a great deal from the Amish. The following is a quote from an article at CNN.

"As we were standing next to the body of this 13-year-old girl, the grandfather was tutoring the young boys, he was making a point, just saying to the family, 'We must not think evil of this man,'" -Rev. Robert Schenck

As I read this article I couldn't help but feel that here is a perfect example of the forgiveness and love that Christians should be showing the world. In the article Sam Stoltzfus is quoted as saying "We think it was God's plan...". Now I can't possibly predict how God will use this for his glory but I have an idea of one way that good can come from this horrible event. The people of that community are now showing the forgiveness and love of Christ to a country that is all about self and would want to seek revenge. We all (believers and nonbelievers alike) can learn a valuable lesson from the example of these humble and Jesus loving people.

Father, I pray that good can come from this tragedy and that all can come to forgive the deeply troubled man that commited this horrible crime. In Jesus' name. Amen.

No Such Thing as Pro-choice

by: Gary Shavey at TheResurgence.com

Being that today, October 2nd 2006, is the national day for Pro-lifers in this country to take their stand on the issues of abortion I write this little blog. I owe much to the following line of thought to a seminary class that I took from David Horner from Talbot Seminary and to the readings of a Jewish Atheist, liberal, left-wing, pro-lifer Nat Hentoff (Jewish Atheist is a special division in Hentoff’s own words).

The issues over abortion are very tricky and thick but it is safe to say that the majority of the arguments are over emotions, selfishness, inconvenience, “rights” and ultimately the truth. It seems at times, that truth is overlooked because pro-choicers do not want to face the logical outworking of their decisions on abortion. Pro-lifers on the other hand tend to deal with truth and fight for what they see as true from both the biblical position and flat out logical position. Believe it or not there are people like Nat Hentoff that are not Bible believers but have logically worked out a pro-life view, yet with some differences to the typical conservative pro-life position (i.e., views on contraceptives and the death penalty). From my perspective, I would say that Mr. Hentoff’s view comes from the fact that he was created in God’s image and still has the law written on his heart so there is this “moral argument” in which God can be proved through the Imago Dei. To say this in another way that is more blunt, there are some folks that have seen through the crap and will not take it anymore, there are people on death row that have at least limited rights but pre-born infants have no rights. Basically being pro-choice only protects the rights of the woman but an infant in the womb has no rights until the last 3 months in the womb. What?

Biblically we see that God knows the life of a person before, during and after the womb. Let us look at a few verses. Jeremiah 1:5 states, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” It is pretty clear that God cares, knows and values life even in the womb. Likewise in Exodus 21:22-23 we see, “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life…” God considers the pre-born as life. If we see that in scripture that God places value on the life of those in the womb we should as well. God also places value on life after the womb as seen in Exodus 20:13, “You shall not murder.”

Logically for the pro-lifer, which maybe would not take into consideration the Bible verses just mentioned, they just know that abortion is wrong. Folks like Nat Hentoff and Mary Meehan (the latter writes for the Progressive) states, "It is out of character for the left to neglect the weak and helpless. The traditional mark of the left has been its protection of the underdog, the weak and the poor. The unborn child is the most helpless form of humanity, even more in need of protection than the poor tenant farmer or the mental patient. The basic instinct of the left is to aid those who cannot aid themselves. And that instinct is absolutely sound. It's what keeps the human proposition going." Again I think this all points back to the Imago Dei so this is common ground with the folks that call themselves pro-lifers. If logically the pre-born in the last term in pregnancy is considered human with rights then so it should be equal throughout pregnancy.

Now let us get to the illogic of pro-choice and how pro-choice is really a farce and should be named something else. For some reason the laws of this land have determined that 3 months before an infant is born there are rights for that child and the child cannot be aborted. But anytime before the last 3 months the child can be aborted. The main line of reasoning is that the baby before the last term is not really or fully a human. There is also another side of the pro-choice that states if the pre-born child were to have a severe handicap after being born there would be a high probability that it would not live a productive fruitful life or survive on its own. Therefore this would be valid reason to abort the child. Logically, if we continue to take both lines of thinking through one could say that even after the child has been born the child could not survive on it’s own till some say maybe 9 months old. This also implies that maybe this infant is not really human till at least 9 months (or there are people like Peter Singer at Princeton University that say you can terminate baby’s life up to 28 days after birth). If this is the case, then people have to start coming to the terms that they can commit infanticide with their babies after they are born. This same logic for today’s abortions can be brought to the table as valid reasons for infanticide or we must come to the opposite conclusion and choose to fight for the rights of the life of the unborn and born child.

After our look at the Reductio Ad Absurdum let us draw some conclusions. When thinking at least logically at the conclusions of someone that believes in pro-choice there are really two options. First we see that for the pro-lifer the answer to abortion is no and the answer to infanticide is no. For the pro-choicer we can now see how the logic does not hold in this position, for abortion yes but for infanticide no? Pro-choice folks are not going to like this but they really should be called pro-infanticide, if they are going to go with abortion then the logic would follow that they would also be pro-infanticide. There are your two options either pro-infanticide or pro-life. There is no logic to the position of pro-choice. Within pro-choice the lines of when an infant is deemed human or even valued are way too blurred and inconsistent, the water does not hold. It is apparent that the pro-choice position has been built on sand and at the same time very surprising that it has stood for so long. So as we commemorate this day for the life of the pre-born and born let us use our minds to show the inconsistencies of the pro-choice view then follow it up by the love and grace of God who creates life, values life and ultimately is the one that can redeem life.
